Supporting your doggo during storm season

ย

Thunderstorm season is here, and while some doggos may not be bothered by the loud noises and bright flashes of lightning, others can become anxious and stressed during these events. Here are our top tips to support your doggo during storm season:

1. Check your yard

Make sure your yard is still secure for your doggo. Check your perimeter fencing and gates to ensure your doggo is safe and secure on your property. A panicked dog during a storm may try to escape and end up in danger on roads, etc.

2. Create a Safe Space

Set up a safe and comfortable space for your dog to retreat to during a storm. This could be a cozy corner in a room with minimal windows, or a crate covered with a blanket to create a den-like environment. Make sure this space is easily accessible to your dog at all times.

2. Provide Distractions

Keep your dog distracted during a storm with toys, treats, or interactive games. Engaging your dog in activities they enjoy can help redirect their focus away from the storm outside. Puzzle toys filled with treats can be particularly effective in keeping your dog occupied. We use teeth treat balls and toothbrush sticks to distract our doggos during a storm.

A loud radio or TV can also help to drown out thunder and scary outdoor storm sunds.

3. Stay Calm and Reassuring

Dogs are highly attuned to their owners' emotions, so it's important to remain calm and composed during a storm. Reassure your dog with a soothing voice and gentle petting to let them know that everything is okay. Your calm demeanour can help alleviate your dog's anxiety.

4. Use Pressure Wraps or Thundershirts

Consider using pressure wraps or Thundershirts to help calm your dog during a storm. These snug-fitting garments provide gentle, constant pressure that can have a calming effect on anxious dogs. Make sure to introduce the wrap or shirt to your dog gradually before the storm hits.
